MAGIC / POWERS
WHAT HAPPENS TO CANON POWERS?
For all new characters, their canon powers are completely "missing". In this case, that means it's as if they never had those powers in the first place. Even in the case of "this power is their life energy", that requirement is entirely removed from their person and they can live just fine without it.
Also in this context, powers are obviously interchangeable with "magic", but they can also include physical advantages that are beyond the scope of a normal person. A good example is Saitama from One Punch Man. His insane one punch strength is a result of working hard everyday for three years straight so it's not "magic", but we will count it as a power in this case.
For animal-like senses, basic is fine but if it's REALLY A+ night vision or something like that, that will be considered a power in this case!

DOES THAT MEAN AU CHARACTERS ARE POWERLESS?
Not necessarily! In Estoria, there is in fact a magic system that allows for the characters to have their own powers here!
HOW DO POWERS WORK HERE?
Some individuals in Estoria are considered "blessed". Right now, it's not entirely known why some individuals have powers and others don't. However, those who are "blessed" have the ability to channel their own life energy into individual powers that they can use.
Some individuals have to learn and practice how to channel that energy. This means a lot of studying to understand the various principles! It includes how to recognize the energy inside of them, to understand the various sensations in the body, to navigate and channel the flow of the energy, to develop something that fits their persona, to find their limits, etc. There are schools that can teach this and some people seek individual teachers and make it a lifelong journey.
And some people are able to naturally recognize their ability at birth. They innately understand how to manipulate their energy without much effort at all. Those who study and those who are natural at manipulating their energy does not determine the strength of the individual. Someone who studies for a long time can be just as a powerful as someone who didn't have to study at all. It's more of a reflection of a person's personality than anything else.
Since life energy can always be improved upon, you will rarely see anyone with more than three spells under their belt. Precision and strengthening what you have is always stronger than a person who happens to have 10+ unpolished spells.
One more important thing:
Families love to accept blessed individuals.
It is not uncommon for family members to be recruits simply because they were found to be blessed. Those individuals who get accepted into the families will find that they can easily improve upon their powers while within, but as they try to develop their powers, it starts to reflect the image of the family they're part of.
It's not known as to why the family has any influence on an individual's powers.

HOW DO POWERS WORK (OOCLY)?
Every character who apps in can have up to three powers. For the most part, the general guideline is one offensive power, one defensive power, and one utility power. However, for those who aren't battle orientated, they can have three utility powers. Utility powers can be things like: "able to light the room", "numb a sense", "make things taste like grape soda", etc.
When you are accepted, you'll be given a link to list the three powers you would like to have in the game. These need to just be simple descriptions, nothing too crazy. "I want a heighten sense of smell" or "I want super strength" works. If you WANT to add additional limits, you can!
You'll get a response back with whether these powers are accepted or not, and they'll be adjusted to the family you got accepted in. If you want to try to adjust to the family you have yourself, that's fine! I'll let you know whether you need to change it or not.
Can I choose powers that are similar to my canon powers?
Yes! That's fine! Just understand it is NOT your canon power.
My character has amnesia, can they still have powers?
Yes! They would have to innately remember their powers or been taught by the family they were accepted into, but there is a general knowledge that amnesia characters are prone to being Blessed and thats why they get accepted so easily even without memories.
Can I choose to be powerless?
Yeah sure!!
What about skills like martial arts, swordsmanship, etc.?
These can remain as skills and don't necessarily have to be a power unless you want it to! There's something fun of having "basketball" as a power cuz it can be used to reflect a character's inner personality, but if you just want them to be good at chess, that's ok! Again, if it goes beyond just being "really good at this skill" and "this should in fact count as a superpower", it will also be eaten.
