This sounds good to me, but I am having a hard time parsing the first part so let me check to see if I'm right.

If I'm understanding correctly, he has a slim chance to fix it immediately if he pulls the "wrong" one, instead of waiting 3 hours-ish to try again. But if he fails that chance, he has no gun at all because it's jammed. IS THIS RIGHT? Totally OK with this if so
