The 4th Wall, when triggered, allows him to fully disassociate. Both physically and emotionally. He just looks at himself and others like characters in a story. It both makes him very hard to harm (as in, he can ignore high levels of pain or trauma) or upset but is DEFINITELY an unhealthy coping mechanism.
It's a passive ability he can't immediately control when it is on or off.
