For some characters, their memories have been completely replaced with alternate memories of living full lives in the world Estoria. To them, this IS their true self and this has always been the life they live. They were born here, they grew up here, they lived here, they are a real member of their organization,
.
They're completely unaware that their memories have been tampered with, and in fact anyone who tries to tell them otherwise will find that it's impossible to convince them this.
.
✯MEMORY LOSSThere are those who cannot remember who they once were. This is an uncommon affliction, but not uncommon enough to be considered particularly rare. In fact, there are some studiess revolving those who have suffered memory loss although not enough to understand the full cause of what has happened, but there are interesting leads.
For one, a very common trait for amnesiacs is that they were "born" near the beaches of Seastar Ocean. The earliest memory that each of these amnesiacs share is that they "left behind their memories to escape the ocean" so to many of them, they consider it the place they were born. Usually the birth is a figurative speech as it's not a very populated area (there is only a single village), but certainly some amnesiacs might have been told that they were truly born in that village.
Another lead, there seems to be two common types of amnesiacs. The first being those who have actually had a life in Estoria before losing their memories. They had friends or families, they had their own fulfilling lives, and then they had forgotten it all. Their relationships still remember THEIR past lives, but the amnesiac does not. The other one are the "full" amnesiacs, those who just seem to have come from nowhere. They don't exist in any database, they have no identification, they had to completely start their new lives from nothing. Luckily, this isn't too hard because there are systems in place to help new amnesiacs gain proper identities so they can acclimate into society.
In fact, families will almost always adopt anyone with amnesia.
Every amnesiac has blessings and it's always a benefit to have a variety of blessings if possible. In return, families have the means to help give amnesiacs a place to live and a temporary purpose or goal until they feel settled into who they are. That brings us to the last lead that scientists have found:
Some of them might be fully blank slates, having to develop personality, morals, etc, and some have strong recognizable traits at the start, but all of them have one common aspect:
they're all determined to rebuild themselves. There is almost a thirst to kind of start a new life because they want to achieve some sort of goal, they're not sure what that goal is, but since they escaped the ocean or since they became conscious of themselves, they remember, "
I have to do something."
✯New CharactersWhenever new characters arrive on the ship, they'll likely run into characters who have regained a bunch of memories before they have.
Trying to convince new characters that their lives are fake will not work. Trying to talk anything about memory regains will not work. If you insist on trying to convince them, they'll suddenly develop a horrible, painful headache that will force them to leave the situation with whatever means necessary. They will get really sick! You can tell them that the situation on the ship will involve murder and maiming, and no one will believe you. You will simply have to accept that you sound crazy until new characters go through a few experiences themselves.
✯Performances (Games)To regain memories, there are specific ways to do so:
✯ Performances/Memory Regaining
Performances (or "Games" for those that are familiar with these types of team rps) are time-based scenarios that often have rules that characters must follow, aiming to achieve the winning conditions to gain prizes. These scenarios can be one day sit down affairs, lasting between two-five hours OR sometimes they can last longer, maybe up to two OOC weeks.
For those unfamiliar, games can be anything, lighthearted, silly slumber party style games like truth or dare or spin the bottle, literal board games like Candyland or Chutes & Latters, or really dark games where injury is possible like Prisoner's Dilemma or Operation. They don't have to be literal games either, they can be as simple as answering the most truthful facts or judging who is the most sinful, etc. Often you work with your team in these games, but sometimes they're open ended and you can play with anyone to achieve your goals. There's a wide variety and you'll learn pretty quick what kind you like best!
At this time, games are ran by Producers, previous performers of the Limelight Stage. If you're interested in running a game or making your own producer, please feel free to email limelight.stage.mods@gmail.com to express your interest!
Here is a directory of all Producers at this time.
✯ Events
There will also be Events. Events will be similar to performances, but they do not have winning or losing conditions. These will be scenarios that often allow characters to discover more information on the world's backstory or maybe other cool and interesting stuff. Sometimes they might be limited to a specific family or two or maybe be open to all. If you're interested in a specific theme or post (deage, dreams, etc) let us know!
✯ Memory Objects
The Ticketmaster will always hand out memory objects (in secret) to performers after each performance and sometimes in events as well. Memory objects are items that usually contain a singular chunk of memory from their real lives. As they continue to regain memories, they'll begin to recognize their other life.
✯Regaining Memories
How should the regain pacing look?
Now obviously, taking a single memory will not instantly revert you back to your old self! It should be a slow gradual process of recognizing that this other life is just as real as the one your character is living now. I'll give you a general guideline. You do not have to follow this guideline 100% but :
For the first 1-4 memories, you feel disconnected from these memories, almsot as if you're watching a movie of a person that looks eerily like you. Everyone who tries to convince you that those memories are yours will sound crazy, yes even to those with amnesia. After that, each new memory regain starts to feel a little bit more like your own. Probably once you get a third of your memories, you'll start to truly believe that these are your memories.
Around Memory 5 will be when you will start to feel strange things happening to your appearance. If your AU/amnesia self has a different appearance, you'll find that you'll start to see that form of yourself in mirrors or reflections. Changes should also be gradual, an itch in areas that should be different. Soon you'll find little patches of fur or scales in place of skin. You'll find the flesh of your finger falling off and metal underneath it, revealing a robotic appendage. The more memories, the more your old self will show. There are ways to prevent this change, but currently, that knowledge is unknown.
Original powers and skills have specific memory unlocks, that's tbd.
